Thank you from Tumblestone: Part 2: To the lifeblood of this festival (the artists/musicians/performers)

Thank you to the bands, musicians, and artists that are the heart of this festival. Each one of you adds something special to the greater equation, and the reason this event is as special as it is. Thank each and every one of you for believing in us, this thing, and showing support/contributing/being here/performing, and for being a core part of what this thing even is about. We are nothing without you. Without all of you, and your energy… This cosmic boogie wouldn’t be as dynamite (*or possible) Much Love to every one of you, and for all that you contributed…to make this year as special as it was. 🙂 ❤ Juan Baztarrica: First time back (in many years)…on that stage, that he had a hand in creating. After a few years of being a passenger, rather than behind the wheel… It was honestly great to have him back. The kid (even though a few more years senior)…still has it, as he did. He did a great job for his first time back on that stage. The addition of him… to this slot made a perfect fit for kicking over the festival and setting the whole vibe for this evening (and the event in total) However, by the time the show was commencing …I was not ready, and couldn’t believe it was already that time…As I had so much more to do before dusk. Therefore I didn’t get to see a lot of this set…But did manage to catch a few moments throughout just to check it out/ soak it in/ see the faces in the crowd, and hear the final speaker setups/arrangements, and the power of it/etc. It was obvious to me right away, that things were sounding super good, and the music carried beautifully in the wind/throughout the yard… which meant no matter the location…you were going to hear/experience it (despite not being up near the stage) He had such a great tone to his voice, and he was undeniably soulful. A real stellar guitar player and his lyrics and song structures are tight and pretty dope… and have an all-around-party-rocking vibe. He was a last-minute addition to the line-up, which was nearly set…and glad we worked it in. We opted to run an hour earlier, as we have a few times before (but usually don’t initiate the option) The reason this slot also worked in our favor, was because this year he wanted to return to the role of MC…which we were surely receptive to the idea of, and thought was a good idea. I have always thought when he was on, he was on…and the kid was hot that night. Although there were others doing announcements, friendly reminders, callouts, and/or addressing safety/parking issues …He was at the helm for most of it, throughout the whole weekend. I am sure to say that we’re all likely to see more of him soon, and the band that may or may not form. Much Love, Juano 🙂 ❤ The Shouldn’ts: This band truly has my heart (*as well as my brother’s, no doubt) These cats are some of the coolest kids you could ever meet …and they have this band…That is way too good… and their music/live shows …will melt your face off. They have to be one of my favorite groups of dudes/musicians…Veterans of the game but with a fresh sound, and bringing out the best in each while doing so. The group consists of some of the most schooled/ influential/seasoned local artists/independent music fanatics…and they know what works, and what does not. They have surely come into their own, with a fairly steady string of performances, and the work they’ve been putting into it, has paid off. They always/continuously manage to bring so much more to each set that they play. The sheer energy of their performances is unsurpassable… and yet every time, they excel and take it to another level. (Every. Single. Time.) Hands down, the best fun you can have while watching a Rock N Roll band. With explosive lead/rhythm guitars, beautiful tripped-out effects, rock-solid grooves, and backing, fine musicianship, artistic merit, big jump kicks, and Rock N Roll antics…They dance throughout the stage, and out into the crowd. The last few times seeing them…they’ve included a dance party, into the performance and this around we got a real “Get Down” A brilliant and fun addition to this performance was a contest whose winner was granted a trophy that read “BEST DANCER TUMBLESTONE 2023 “ (which was clearly and cleverly made from a repurposed Karate trophy. … Like, how much fun is that!!!?!!! ❤ The whole set was filled with fire, smoke, sweat, and rock ‘n roll….that really got things cranked up another notch…At least to eleven. Even though (as the name suggests) they are the Shouldn’ts…I would. I love these dudes, dearly. 🙂 ❤ (*And you should too) Thirsty Monks: This band is such a solid force that brings the funk hard every time they perform… but when they do it out here, they are known to bring something a little more special, hard-hitting, and with a theme that carries into the performance. They are always a crowd favorite, so much fun to experience…and they deliver highly energetic performances with danceable grooves, played at peak performance level, by some of the finest/skilled musicians in this region. When they perform out here…it has always been a Top-notch presentation/orchestration that positively oozes magic into the air, and makes it that much more/ so extra sweet. Each member brings something unique to the band, and all are very accomplished musicians in their own right. Together they form like VOLTRON, with powers unknown to the common man/woman/other… and wielding the funk like it’s a weapon (that brings peace, love, good times, and great vibes) These cats sure do have things dialed in… and deliver a mother fucking riot to a dance floor. I really can’t say much more about each member (that I already have not said before/in previous praises/thank yous) But I will say that I am pleased to see Alex is still among you. The addition of him to the lineup of the band is such a killer move and adds so much more dynamic to the band (via auxiliary kit). You guys killed it again this year… and the set was stellar. You had a great look, sounded amazing, had a good selection of songs, and was a really fun set to watch. Love you guys, and thank you for the continual support. It means so much to have you in our corner/on our stage/part of this and help make things run smoothly. 🙂 ❤ Stubbs And The: This performance almost didn’t happen…but I’m so glad we pressed, and did what we could to make it happen. But, let’s just say we are hella stoked that we did pursue the idea. This 5 piece indy progressive Alt-funk-folk group hailing from Rossland BC…was on the final leg of their 40 (ish) date Cross- Canada tour, and made contact to see what it would take to jump on at Tumblestone. Upon Review, we knew right away that despite being relatively unknown…they would become a fan favorite for sure. We knew that if they were to perform here, that they would do so in front of a good-size crowd (of the right people) and essentially win them over…leaving with their name on the tips of their tongues, they’d not be forgotten. Next time they roll through…They are sure to pull in a good amount of those people, and have a good turnout as they deserve. What I really liked about this band… is the fact that I couldn’t explain them properly, nor put them, or their sound into a box, category, or genre…when describing. (*not easily anyway) Nice folk, and truly sweet as pie. It was a pleasure to meet them, chat with them, and spend some time together. I am super stoked that they got to get a real taste of a chunk of our local scene, and the bands/musicians, and people within. I am glad to know that you had a great time, heard/saw some cool acts, met some friends, and felt the love. The people did not see this coming…and it was awesome to watch them realize it. To start the set with the chanting of “Ave Satani” which they use as an intro/interlude/bridge to their song titled “Satan” … Which is an absolute rollercoaster of a treat. Using this as a lead-in…created a perfect moment, that quickly grabbed the attention of everyone…who ran towards the stage, to see what was happening (as a lot were unaware/not familiar) the song is usually somewhere a little deeper in the set… It was brilliant to lead with it…and was sure to win everyone over…right outta’ the gates. The performance was certainly stellar in every way. The whole band was at peak performance, as they were on the tail end of a long tour…and had that whole tour’s worth, under their belts. I am happy you picked up on the love and magic in the air, and used it to your advantage, as you pitched woe at the crowd/people within it. You guys smashed out one hell of a set, and left us wanting more. It was a pleasure to meet each of you, and be able to share a moment, and/or the memories of something special that happened. Much Love to each of you, and the pups 🙂 ❤ I hope 2024 is filled with absolute joy, and good things (for you) …Until we dance again… 🙂 ❤ Wax Mannequin: It feels like “Someone fixed the game for me” once again. Another truly unforgettable experience, and opportunity. Most definitely Bucket List-type shit… and it happened again. Twice. We knew going into this year that Wax had a great time last year, and wanted to come back again… Which we were absolutely ecstatic to hear, and armed with that alone…we happily began to commence work, and flush out the details of this year’s program. He already had a few dates set for the summer, including a circuit around MOM festival (Fort St. James, BC) the weekend before, and he wanted to do the same in Northwestern Ontario using Tumblestone as the anchor. We offered to help secure a date for the night before, but were unsure of all of the dates/ itinerary/ details (at that point)…So played it by ear, and would make a move/ reach out to whoever if need be. Joey Balducchi nailed down a few options for a short run on either side of the weekend…to seize the opportunity/make worthwhile/ maximize gains vs. just for the feels/ belief in/ artistic sacrifice. … This enabled him to make the communal pilgrimage once again, while ensuring to put bread on the table in the days following. We had only planned for the one night (which I thought would be best to land on the Saturday) But was given an option of the possibility of performances on both of the nights “if we were into that type of thing” (Normally we haven’t/wouldn’t/shouldn’t, most likely)…But how could we not!! We were hella stoked for the offer/opportunity, and honestly relished in the idea. At this point, we didn’t have any out-of-town acts attached to the Friday, and normally like to feature one per day (if possible) *Stubbs & The(and/or other(s)) weren’t in the picture at this point in time (Late Spring/Early Summer)…So we were fully down. As I recall…I think the plan was to have a solo set on the Friday, and a full band (backed by local heroes) on the Saturday. The band was to be an extended version of that deadly group of musicians that performed with him in the prior year (Sillman, Skillen, and Bernie)…and adding even more to the roster (but organizational time didn’t allow for that to happen) By the time that all three knew what was going on, it was too hard to make something bigger happen… but they knew that they could pull off something huge and memorable, by just tackling the set as the 4 piece. It turned out that they wanted to perform both days as the supergroup… with a different/eclectic mix of song selections (for each) that spanned throughout Wax’s career, including special covers, and a good chunk of it showcasing the newest offering “The Red Brain” Friday’s performance saw the return of Wax Mannequin, to our sacred ground. We are humbly honored to have the privilege to experience another performance on that stage, let alone get to witness the candle burn again. The performance hit hard, was extremely beautiful, and immediately tickled at the heartstrings… as what once felt like a distant memory, it felt like no time had passed since we last time we were all together. You were great/sounded great… and Sillman, Bernie, and Skillen did another top-notch job of accompanying you. It’s so hard to believe that out of just a few jams…a band that tight can be the result. The crowd was mad hype, and into it big time. You could see the joy on their faces, while chanting along with the choruses as they swayed, and shuffled around to get a better spot up front….where they could belt them out louder. The set was packed with classic cuts, and newer singles from the newest offering. As well as his version of Geoff Berner’s “Volcano God” …which was a fucking treat to see performed. The set was without question perfect, in every way. *… And we still had another one to go on the following evening. 🙂 ❤ Saturday Night’s performance brought the whole game up another notch. They secretly planned a special set (as they prepped during the day)…and this next performance was going to be something never before seen. A backdrop that was crudely fastened to the back of the stage, would certainly tell that tale. We all knew were in for, and were going to get something incredibly special… and anticipation was growing immensely as we all awaited for you to come out of the house and take the stage. The veil was lifted as you walked out… in the form of an Archangel, and adorning a crown of candles that stood ablaze on top of his head…that danced back and forth, and cast bizarrely beautiful shadows across the stage and the grounds leading up to it…as the band settled in This “crown” was an evolution of something that already had been perfected…but took it to a whole other level. It was absolutely breathtaking, and a powerful sight to see. Nearly indescribable, or at least hard to express…Words couldn’t do it justice. It was something you’d have to see with one’s own eyes… It was a spectacle to witness. A projector illuminated the screen on the back wall…and played a long-winded loop, loaded with gorgeous textures, glitches, and accompanying artwork… that took the show to a whole other level, and was an absolute treat to witness. Once they started, they were in a complete zone, and took us all with them. The Saturday night’s set was again chock-full of a great collection of songs, and the layout of those choices. Bernie, Sillman, and Skillen were on point once again, and the 4 of you just murdered it hard with each set played. As the crown of candles burned down, you played a set that would go down to be one of the greatest sets that could ever be played…and we were all tongue-tied to fully articulate just how good it was, and how much joy was obtained from experiencing that experience. As the candles drew closer to the nub, you plucked them off one by one, and passed them out amongst the crowd. I happened to see one go to a close friend’s little boy (who was upfront, as you passed them along.) He stood there with the flaming candle in hand, and watched the rest of the set with this wondrous look of amazement on his face… I thought it was without a doubt a precious thing to see. It was also pleasure to meet your kids, and we were honored to have had them out, and for them to get to experience this thing, with you, and along your side. They both were in truth, cool kids. They were hip as hell, and they were a pleasure to converse with/be around. They were extremely well-mannered, kind-hearted, and cooperative throughout their whole stay. They were a great help throughout the weekend, and weren’t off-put by anything that was asked of them to do (whenever it arose) Another memorable moment of mine (during this set) was looking over at the kids dancing away/clapping/signing, and cheering throughout the entire set… up top of the bleachers at the back of the floor. It looked like they were so proud of you, and of the good reception, and love you were receiving from us all. * it hit me in the feels, for sure. It means so much, and I am so glad they had a great time. It was most definitely one for the books. Thank you one more time for your love, support, and inclusion in. It means so much that you care/ continue to care about this little thing we have going on here, and what we are trying to do. Much love Chris, until we dance again. 🙂 ❤ It was nice to have met your children as well, and so glad they got to have an experience that 🙂 ❤ …And have to shout out the boys one last time…Sillman, Skillen, Bernie…You guys are all monsters with no comparison. Much Love. 🙂 ❤ Femur: The best, Jerry… the best!!!! These little fuckers will knock your teeth out with their music, and the power of their live performances. Truly one of the greatest bands this region has ever produced. Despite being 3 of the sweetest kids, their music is as loud and aggressive as it can get (to the lament)… but to label them as such, would just be completely oblivious, biased, and/or ignorant. This band deserves so much more credit than that, as they are a few of the most promising, and accomplished groups of musicians (even considering they are still so young) If they stay together, creating music…Who knows what they are capable of? Despite being a heavy act they are a little more palatable than most…Most likely because of the extreme tightness, the quality of their performances/ energy that surrounds them, and the relentless fury of skilled instrumentation, superior songcraft, arrangements, and dedicated musicianship. Their live performances are always top-notch, and really couldn’t be any better. They deliver every time they hit a stage. The grooves they produce are so intense and so thick, sure to be felt by ( and infectious) to all on the floor/in the pit/or surrounding their stage. To look over the crowd as they performed this year…was a site to behold. Probably one of the most punishing sets ever laid down on that stage. And the crowd was utterly loving every moment of it. The boys were at peak performance and brought it so hard. It was a sea of madness that ebbed and flowed like a storm’s tidal surge. The audience moved more than most shows that I have been to, the floor was positively turbulent with frenzied dancing, and folks letting loose in a completely filled-to-the-brim floor that spilled out and over into everywhere that was surrounding (*All with smiles on faces, and love in their heart) Love these boys, what they are, and what they continue to do 🙂 ❤ I think they are currently working on more new material…and super excited to get a taste of it (other than the additions to sets that I’ve seen/heard over the last year or so)…We are so stoked for more news about the release of that. Be sure to stay peeled. The Bay Street Bastards: These bastards have been a part of Tumblestone every year since their first (2016) …and they have brought a ruckus every time. They are an integral performance we love to include in the mix, and it seems very necessary to the event as a whole. This year we didn’t receive an application from them…When I reached out to find out why, I learned that Kev had been booked for work, and couldn’t get out of it. I sadly removed them out of the running, and the mix. A few weeks passed, and at this point, most of the selections were made, and the lineup draft was nearly set except for a couple of slots. I received a message from Riley asking if the Bastards had submitted an application, as he did not know. Kevin usually applies, but didn’t because he knew he couldn’t attend this year. I told him there wasn’t an application from them, and he replied by saying even though Kev couldn’t make it, the rest of them wanted to be here and would like to perform without him if they had to. When reaching out to get an update on the details on performing/attending members…I got word that there might be a chance that Kev might be able to swing it, but was not positive either way (at that moment)…So I had some fun making the promo tile with an old photo of the band. As they had some lineup changes since it was taken… I just crudely photoshopped some members out, and the new ones in, leaving Kev just out of frame (half in/half out)… to cover both scenarios, whether he’s here, or not. At this point in the game, it was too late and in truth…not really fair to re-work the Lineup…Instead gave them a choice of any of the options for the remaining slots (for both days). They chose Friday at 1 AM, which normally isn’t for the faint of heart, but this is prime party time and usually dialed up a lot… which I knew would be a great fit for them. Their performance was without a doubt… tight, and was sure to have elevated the crowd, the party, and the night in general. I must say that was one for the books. It must have been a trip for them to not have their Captain on deck…but Riley stepped up to command the ship, and he did a fantastic job at doing so. I love the vibe of this band, and the way it makes folks want to party. I love what they add to the festival, and the scene in general… a great group of dudes, and fun as hell (every time). Thank you for all of the fun/memories you have generated over the years, and cheers to you all for all that you are, and that performance as well. Much Love to every one of you Bastards 🙂 ❤ Vape Dealer: Thank you dudes… for all that each of you is, and for what you’ve all done for, and/or with us. You have been great supporters, and have proven to have given sacrifices in the name of. Countless times, and on numerous occasions… You have stepped up, shown advocation for, and spoken kindly of our cause. Thanks a million for that 🙂 ❤ It’s always hard to work the perfect bands into a few handfuls of performance slots… So many to consider, with so few options to play around with…No one wants too early, or too late. *The Late slots are extremely hard ones to fill, despite being one of the best-received slots that there could be…as people are in absolute party mode at this point… and if a band delivers, there’s no way it will go unnoticed/ or have a weak attendance. If they bring it hard, they will be rewarded with a ravenous crowd and future fan base. …And I think that was the case for you this year. You did just that, and won the crowd over. I love that you guys brought the big rigs, the walls of doom, speakers, and cabs…which completely filled the stage, like never before. Surely the most the stage has ever seen (at once) It was undeniably crushing…and thrust the crowd into a frenzy. Rock solid performance, honed, and super tight as a trio. Great songs, and arrangement/performance of. There was a stellar vibe all around throughout the crowd. The addition of Larson to the lineup as frontman/ on Lead Bong/ Lead Weed… was no doubt a sight to behold, and added so much fun/ great dynamic for the set…Surely destined to go down as one of the most memorable moments in Tumblestone history. No one had ever seen anything like that before, and they all wanted to see him smoke all that he could. It added so much fun to your set/vibe of the evening/ moment, and was a spectacle of epic proportions (*as was the sack he devoured) The people couldn’t stop talking about it… It was sure to have blown minds (*Larson’s included 😉 Thanks to you dudes, for who you are, and all that you do. Much Love 🙂 ❤ Bernie Wolski: Bernie was a last-minute addition and kicked things off properly on the Saturday. He took the stage prior to Melody as she was to take the first slot…followed by Lily Taylor, who had to drop out due to being sick. Bernie was quick to jump in, and kick off the day with some fun tunes, sung with a smile… And as attendees shook off the morning dew, scraped the crusties out of their eyes, just got, and/or just finished some coffee… and concentrated on nursing that headache from a good round/overdid it a little hard, the night before (and/or had barely slept). He kicked out the jams and did so with a breeze. He had a good selection of various styles throughout the set and performed (aptly)…a great collection of tracks. Always a pleasure to have someone who honestly cares… step up. He is a skilled/multifaceted musician/ producer/ engineer…and a hell of a nice guy. Thanks, Bernie.. for all you bring and all that you give. Much Love 🙂 ❤ Melody Corvid: Melody didn’t even want to perform this year and was not really prepared. She only offered to, Because Lily requested not to go first if possible (as she thought she’d perform better following another) …And Melody was quick to allow that to happen for her. Melody had a super set, even considering there hadn’t been any practice in quite some time, other than when she had last busked at a few flea markets. She dusted off the cobwebs and dust from her trusty guitar and rifled through some of her catalog of original songs (which she said she couldn’t really remember and didn’t feel confident about performing again) But she killed the bunch effortlessly (and I’m not surprised one bit) She’s a beautiful little weirdo… with songs of gold, sounding like sung from/of the mouth/lungs of a bird. All of which are quite unique, fun, and ramble on nicely…yet have great structure, and are performed with skill, and love…Surely to leave an Earworm (or more) in your head. She’s a real gem. FO SHO. Bernie Wolski was an awesome unprompted addition to the set, that added great dynamics, and texture to the otherwise stripped-down acoustic solo set…Which was great to hear, and added a little extra flair. * Now I say “hear” … as I did not see any of this set. I just laid in bed (not ready to face the day)… and just listened to the whole thing from there, as I prepped to get motivated/moving. It was what was needed to get my day started (*and it worked, I felt great because of it) Much Love Melody 🙂 ❤ …* Now do “Classical Gas” Sunday Wilde: Sunday is an absolute gem. We love her to pieces, and think you should too. She’s a classy/brassy powerhouse of a soul, singer, songwriter, musician, artist …and truly unique character, and especially to this region (with her Northwestern Ontario tales of being a woman, love, beauty, friendship, hardship, and loss. She has a super cool swagger, as is her approach to old-time rag-time/ honky-tonk/ Roots/ jazzy/ Americana/ Canadiana /Rhythm & Blues type arrangements. When she performs, she absolutely hammers on the keys, and she belts out (with slick tone) pieces of her soul (at the top of her lungs) Her performances are always captivating, honest, raw, and very danceable…it’s hard to watch, and not feel yourself being uplifted by a wave of happiness, and/or straight up getting- down, and/or boogie. She is the real deal, a true artist, and brings her best every time she makes music, and /or takes the stage… It’s for reasons like this, that we positively love her. She is such an amazing person, with great talent, who in deed creates some unique music. Her musical legacy will not be ignored, and/or forgotten. This year Sunday had some company. She was backed by some close friends of hers… Jimi Wilson on guitar, Nancy Ewachow on bass… and Bernie Wolski joining them on drums. Also with her were some of her family (2 sons/and a partner) from out of town…they came in to check it out, and be there for your performance. Glad to hear that they loved it. The performance was exactly what was needed for that moment… As people were wiping the crust from their sleepy eyes, as preparing to give it another go. The performance was a nice bridge into something a little harder…but not before the crowd was ready. Your set gave them a chance to get a little warm afternoon sun on their faces, and dance some of their hangovers away, before things started to get a little more dicey. It was a perfect start to a lovely afternoon, with a chill vibe as beautiful as anything you might have ever experienced. It was a great performance and I’m sure the crowd really responded well. Thank you for the kind words, and for being a part of it. We Love you Sunday, thank you for being so cool. 🙂 ❤ O’Rose: Truly a wonderful Kid, with merriment in his eyes. Blessed and he knows it. He’s highly skilled for an up-comer. He is a very kind soul, and super positive, he has a good flow, vocab, wordplay, and structure, delivered with quickness, swiftness, preciseness, smooth cadence, and honor. He is such a nice person he offered to share his set time with B The Wiz, (who previously was supposed to be out of town for work/but fell through, and he got back on) Despite unbeknownst to them both B got his own a few slots up. It was a miscommunication on all of our parts… but it didn’t matter to them, and they shared the time given equally (which would help us through ahead of schedule) O’Rose delivered his portion as finely, and smoothly as ever, and was an absolute pleasure to have him with us. Thank you for all that you brought to this event …Much Love Kid 🙂 ❤ B The Wiz: B almost wasn’t able to make it due to being called out of town for work… and for a few weeks was out of the lineup (after just being announced in the First Wave/ the first 16) The contract fell through and after a reach out…was put back in the mix (*in a different spot as it was getting tight to work him in, at this point ) We had just lost another that week, due to a break-up/band falling out…and had a hole in the early afternoon. So, we decided to offer it to him… and he took it without hesitation. The set was slated for an hour-long slot, but he was uncertain and thought he was jumping on a piece of O’Rose’s set…which was not supposed to be the case. They shared the slot…O’rose first, with B running beats…then switched over with B on the mic, and O’Rose running the laptop. This just goes to prove these kids are humble, super supportive, and willing to do whatever for the common good, or looking out for a brother, what they have is going on/is doing…and supporting that thing. B’s delivery of, and song selection were on point (as were the threads, and kicks that he wore) He has a great stage presence, always promoting positivity, and is very considerate of everyone. The performance was a lot of fun, and kept the crowd happy. Thank you for all that you do, and for what you add to this event. Much Love B 🙂 ❤ Hopeless Ghost: Hopeless Ghost has only been around for a few years, and recently went through some changes in the lineup… But they’ve been getting better and better every time they perform. Paired with rock-solid craftsmanship/ songs, and catchy new material…It was their time to shine. The lads were firing on all cylinders, and their overall performance was nothing short of great. They cranked out their set in the middle of the afternoon, but did so with great valiance, and beautiful execution. I am pretty sure this was the tightest I have ever seen them… and saddened to hear however that this was their final show. Without a doubt though, the members in this band will go on to do great things… and know that whatever it is they will end up doing/are doing will be worth checking out. Cheers to these cats, and good luck to each of you…with whatever it is you choose to do next. Keep creating your art, and music, and stay true. Much Love 🙂 ❤ Fat Cop: I was excited to have the chance to include the latest lineup of Fat/Cop…which I have been wanting to add for a while, after hearing some of the newest offerings by them (on YouTube, Bandcamp, or something.) They hadn’t been doing a whole lot lately (for a little while now)…But that’s hopefully about to change, and the newer direction…propels them to weird and wonderful places. *The new material/most current has to be some of the most interesting material that has come out of the Bay (as of late) Connor, Connor, And Jesse have a very unique approach to a lo-fi aesthetic, with a warm familiar sound, reminiscent of a timeless era of cool artists that made/make powerfully inspirational independent music…for the smartly creative, artists, and for social freaks, and weirdos alike. I would say their performance this year was absolutely incredible. They played one hell of a set…and I for one was floored. FAT/COP has always been really good, and had so much coolness to them… but I wasn’t prepared for how good they’ve become, and how tasty that tone was, that they had. They smashed out a flawless, energetic, and enigmatic set… that was a lot of fun and set the mood for us to ramp up/rev up the engines a bit before going pedal to the metal. Stellar performance, and execution by all 3 members, they gelled really well together, and I think the crowd was really into it. (*I was extremely) Thank you for being a part of it, and all that you have brought/added to this year’s event. Thank you, and much love to you 3… I wish you all the best…and hope 2024 brings you great things, and/or opportunities 🙂 ❤ Jake & the Town: …Speaking of a group of Social freaks, and weirdos… This next group takes the cake and eats it too. This last performance…was so much more everything, than ever before. The version of “The Town ” that had shown up this year was bursting at its seams with more members than one could even count. Those who were added into the mix, brought something a little special to it…An extra spice, a flavor, a note, and/or something else… World-Class musicians from all corners of this region, and walks of life (man, woman, and/or beast) met among the rocks at the nexus of the apex of the grounds…and became one, in accordance with/to how it was written. This was a highly thought-out arrangement, treatment, movements, stage plot, and plan…nothing like we have ever seen before. I was sent the draft of the performance breakdown, and was immediately intrigued, and excited …as it was so different from any proposal we’ve ever seen. He wanted to make this performance something special… and did that tenfold. Jake is a true visionary. His work is soulful, complex, outstanding, and does/will transcend time and space…yet he does a magnificent job harnessing that chaotic mass, and presenting those complex “object(s)” ideals, ideology, and ideas in beautiful ways through joyous/haunting/ heartfelt melodies, harmonies, words straight from a poet’s heart/through the mouth, a lot of magick, and whispers of the ancients. This year’s performance was a wildly explosive spectacle right from the start. The entrance was as grandiose as one could get, and had its members arriving single-file … playing their instruments through the grounds, in line and meandering through the pathway along the house …Making their way (in joyous celebration and merriment) towards the stage one by one. As each member approached the stage they took up their positions in line and proceeded to play as they waited for the arrival of the others to take theirs… They made good use of the space with members filling every nook and cranny. It was amazing to see the depth of knowledge, and character that was added to (on top of) what is traditionally known as “the Town” Joining Jake, Olivia Korkola, Jess Horricks, Kevin Sidlar, and Arek Chamski were Jordan Strum, Danny Erickson,TedRae, and the Legendary Tommy “Milestone” Horricks (which blew my mind to see) *It was an absolute honor to have had him on that stage, and for him to be able to share a Tumblestone experience with us. 🙂 ❤ Also, it was beautiful to see him doing it with his son at his side. I am almost positive that this was the biggest group of musicians that have ever performed on that stage at one time. With it came one of the longest setup times, and most complicated arrangements to mix. But I think the effort put forth really made the performance extra special. That Town was bustling with more members than ever before seen, and they all had tricks up their sleeves. The performance was teeming with wonderful, and weird things, special guests, show-pony tricks, theatrics, and performance antics…It was incredibly fun, and sure to go down as one of the greatest performances to ever grace a stage at Tumblestone. It was a romantic/heartfelt vision, executed beautifully through wondrous orchestration. Everything about it felt so special. The performance was a circus…with Jake being the Master of Ceremonies/ringleader of this great show – who had amazing conducting, control, and orchestration of the biggest who’s who of the local music scene throughout decades and/or eras of Thunder Bay’s world-class musicians. They delivered a 75+ minute performance show worthy of any stage, theater, and/or Big Top. Jake, you know we love you, I have been vocal about that… and to the rest of the Town, and all its guest members… we extend that to you as well. Much Love to all of you who are “the Town” 🙂 ❤ Webby D & Grimmace The Butler: This year saw us bring back the gruesome twosome known as Webby D & Grimmace The Butler (for the second time) …And they made known right away exactly why it was a great idea to do so… They knocked it out of the park, and straight into the stratosphere. The performance was one of their best… chock-full of antics, skits, performance pieces, crowd participation, and mad hype… which one would expect to see, which was sure to have pleased, but they brought a lot more and kept the crowd interaction high, and on their toes…throwing their hands in the air (and waving them around like they just didn’t care) …throughout the entire performance. It was a sight to behold, and was sure to get the bums up off of their seats and onto the floor…dancing like fools with smiles wide. The slotted time we ended up with was a much earlier start time, and on paper…might not have seemed like the best option, but it was tricky to have found a better slot considering what we were dealing with, and what the options were. I knew that out of the options…the one we went with, was the one. At that time the people needed a little kick start/ newly found drive… and I feel you guys brought them exactly that. The song selection was on point and the execution/performance was world-class, and likely to be a favorite performance/memorable moment of this year’s event (for many). The participation of the crowd was at a really great level and they loved every moment of it. You guys made it supremely fun, and I’m glad you felt the warmth. Thank you to both…for what they brought to the performance, and for all that the energy, love, and charm they brought to the event. Much love to you both 🙂 ❤ Forever Dead!: Speaking of fire… This band did it again and did so with a bang, and an explosion of an electrifying set that kicked ya in the nuts… and set the tone for the rest of the evening. This band kicks so much ass. They honestly Get better and better with every time that they take the stage. Finely honed Punk Rock that could easily rival (or beat) anything that’s comparable. Although still relatively babies…These cats have been in the game for so long, and continue to evolve as a band, and showcase their musicianship as they craft songs that don’t conform to standards, and exceed expectations…and straight from the heart. Music that’s honest, raw, emotionally charged, so much fun, and so full of energy, etc., etc., blah, blah, blah… and they pull it off (and wear it) extremely well. A great group of kids, and rock-solid musicians… that have been churning out quality produce worthy of any market(s) Their latest offering (*which was freshly out just before Tumblestone) is worlds above anything that is comparable. It’s hands down one of the best collections of songs to be released (locally) as of late. The Whole EP/Mini-Album (?) is straight whiskey from the bottle… Fire!! Your song craft and musicianship are at an all-time high, I think you get better, and better with each album… *And I’m not saying that in a bad way, quite the opposite. I just think the bar is continuously being raised. You guys are on your game (and have been for quite some time) The inclusion of those songs in the set was always a great thing to see when promoting a new album… Some of which have been played, no doubt but relatively new (ish)… So real fun to hear, and see (especially live). Their live performances always capture such power, intensity, and greatness… and this year’s performance was no exception. All 5 of them brought it hard, played with enormity, and smashed out a rock-solid fucking set that surely had to blow minds. It’s always a special treat to see them on that stage, and to witness the ritualized ferociousness that occurs when they do. All of you are so great…good people/ friends. Very kind, and caring…and pleasant to be around. You have a rad vibe, exceptional musicians, hella talented, and continually deliver the goods….Every. Single. Time. (material, and live) Thank you all, for all that you are, and all that you do. *…Can you tell that we love you 🙂 ❤ The Doggett Experience: The “Experience” and its members are a phenomenal example of a band possessing true artistry, technical skill, and craftsmanship. This group has some of the best/ technically-capable/ schooled musicians this town has ever had. Each member that Doggett has brought into it is equally as important, and very great in their own right… therefore there for obvious reasons (you really couldn’t have selected a better bunch) Skillen, Craig, Alex…you guys are the best ❤ A well-built and finely tuned machine that absolutely crushes a live performance, and curates an experience worthy of the title. Truly the finest of concentrates, and the purest essence of expressive creation through music. The performance this year was honestly really good, It sounded great, and was a lot of fun. I love the way that they build their setlists, and the attention paid to the dynamics of it… and how a crowd would react. You have a great way of interacting with a crowd, drawing in, and always so very welcoming. Your antics/banter peppered throughout was very amusing, and was sure to please…as were the interludes that were contained within the breakdowns, and bridges. 😉 ❤ All members were spot on, and brought their best. They are currently putting the finishing touches on the new album, and included a bunch of these songs into the setlist (which are an ample example of why they are so good). It was a pleasure to see them play. The Album is due to be released momentarily… and when it’s out I suggest you get one of them. (*Edit…Just released!! Hit them up for one.) Thank you to all of you, for that extraordinary set you delivered, the love you’ve shown, what you’ve done for us/to better us, and what you guys bring to this event year after year. …So much love to each of you 🙂 ❤ Teknosis: This band has seen some changes over the past year, including the addition of a singer, and some key member lineup changes. They have since fine-tuned their sound/songs/performances over the last year. I think it has paid off nicely, and think they are on track to really shine with the release of their upcoming album (in production) Their performance at Tumblestone this year was the best I have seen/heard them. It was hard-hitting, and insanely intense…which nearly shook the foundations to the ground. All members appeared to be having fun, sounded great, and performed very tightly while delivering one hell of a set. All veterans of the scene through various projects…They have years of experience under their belt… before this amalgamation of technical sludge. All are highly skilled in their own right, and with accomplishments. But together they are pretty strong contenders for something really special. They gel quite nicely together on stage… and played a terrific set, that was sure to please. The crowd was having a blast, into it, and unquestionably going really hard. I think this performance added a good kick to the evening, and glad that we got to experience it. Thanks for bringing that…Much Love dudes 🙂 ❤ Yung Shalack: This kid is destined for big things. Truly one of the greatest up-and-comers. Love the steeze, his approach to the game, the smooth flow, and the tone of his voice. Yung Shalack is one hell of a hype man whether it’s his own performances, or as an addition to another’s…He elevates the sitch. When he performs he’s bringing mad ruckus and oodles of infectious energies… that’s surely bound to make the listeners move. He was the last official application, and the last to be added to the lineup. We had a late slot open on the Saturday night, and an earlier one in the day. I knew where I’d like to see him… but didn’t think he’d bite. Since O’Rose, and B The Wiz were already back to back in the afternoon… I was really hoping that he’d consider the later slot… and bite hard, without any hesitation. This just shows you the character he has. His performance this year was a little later than the time that was originally slotted (about an hour or so, due to some heavy stage reconfigurations that came with a few of the more complicated acts). But he brushed that off and hit the stage hard…reopening the dance floor for the already up-front crowd, and bringing back flocks of people from out the grounds, and to the stage. He delivered a high-energy set, which I’m not surprised, and had a strong notion that would be the case. He absolutely crushed it. Thank you, kid and Much Love 🙂 ❤ * Performances by members of Skids with Skills peppered throughout the weekend. A few of the members of the performance troupe known as Skids with Skills were here throughout the entire weekend…But were mainly posted up doing various tasks/duties for decent blocks of time during the festival. Which left only a select amount of time, and resources to do many performances. But once the shift(s) were over they got to unwind, and play around a little. Most likely improvised movements, and more free-flow as opposed to structured, and/or choreographed performance pieces…but was a pleasant addition regardless. The performers executed various types of disciplines and routines throughout the course of the festival…but did so as they seemed fit, and/or suited to the feel of the moment, the performance, or wanting to enhance the moment with an added vibe. We welcomed their involvement at any level…and were glad to have them out despite the scope of the productions/performances. It was lovely just to have them here with us and as a part of the event. Much Love to all of the performers who helped bring a little more magic into the eyes and hearts of the curious folk, and the wanderlust spectators. Thank you for all of the performances, fire, and magic that you blessed this event with…and helped make it what it was. Much Love, to all of you 🙂 ❤ Phineas Gauge: Glad everything sort of worked out …and the sacred slot was going to you it belongs to. In Tradition, this slot (festival closer)…was offered to them because of their reputation for having long-winded late-night jam sessions and private shows… known to keep sessions rolling into the crack of dawn…So it was a no-brainer (and they’ve owned this slot multiple times since. This year I offered the same, and they couldn’t swing it…due to prior engagements. However, the stars aligned and that gig fell through. Since there wasn’t a replacement yet set, it was easy to slide them right back in (if they wanted the slot) …Keeping with the same spirit, they did, and delivered a performance that was exactly what was needed at that point in time. Phineas Gauge is wild to experience as the group and catalog, can be huge, or small/ Chill, and/or intense, funky, but rocky as hell/as they morph/move around/exchange instruments throughout the whole set… You never know what you’re going to get, or how long they can go/ and how long they can hold the party in their grips. When they have no more gas…our celebration can end, and we can lay to rest knowing another cycle is complete. They are a fun band, and a great one to harness folks for one last call…to get the most out of their night/get up and dance(and have a blast)…one more time, before we put ourselves down for much-needed rest. The performance this year didn’t run extremely long, and its members weren’t as numerous as in previous years… but had a few special surprises throughout, guests, and had the feel to it, as one would expect from a Phineas Gauge set. Despite being somewhat stripped down, they smashed out a solid performance…clocking in at just over two hours. ALL members brought their “A” game, and were extremely proficient, they selected/ executed a great collection of songs, and set the mood just right… to set the night ablaze, one last time before we put another phenomenal weekend to completion. It’s a special treat to see them play, in their element… and the late-night sessions that they play are pure magic, and have been a precious gift to anyone that gets to witness it. …Bless these beauties, their beautiful minds, and the strangeness that emanates from them. So much love to each, and all of them. 🙂 ❤
